Tearless onions to go on sale in Waitrose next week
Waitrose is to become the first UK retailer to sell tearless onions.
"Sunions" are a sweet variety of the vegetable that "doesn't reduce cooks to tears".
Grown in Spain, they will retail at £1.50 for a three-pack when they go on sale online and in selected stores from Tuesday next week.
The new products were first developed by agricultural giant Bayer and were created by cross-breeding less pungent strains of onion.
Waitrose, which has stores in Nottingham and Newark, said the tearless onions were "perfect for those with sensitive eyes as well as cooking in the kitchen with children".
MP angered by school trust's trans policy
A school trust's decision to not admit transgender girls has angered a local MP.
The Girls' Day School Trust (GDST) runs 25 schools in England and Wales, and has now said it will only be admitting pupils based on their "legal sex" rather than gender identity.
The Trust said it was doing this to protect its schools' single-sex statuses.
But Nottingham East MP Nadia Whittome, who has one of the schools in her constituency, was angered by the move.
The Labour MP told ITV: "The trust is hiding behind the Equality Act as a reason for this policy not to admit transgender girls.
"But the Equality Act itself is clear on this.
"There's a provision in it that allows single-sex schools to maintain their single-sex exemption while also admitting pupils of the opposite sex in exceptional circumstances."
The trust's policy also states applicants who are "legally female but identify as trans or non-binary" will be considered on a "case-by-case basis".
Cheryl Giovannoni, the trust's CEO, defended the decision.
She said: "Under current laws and guidance, the GDST believes that an admissions policy based on gender identity rather than the legal sex recorded on a student's birth certificate could jeopardise the status of GDST schools as single-sex schools under the act.
"We will continue to monitor the legal interpretation of this exemption."
Double Clubcard points on offer to Tesco shoppers in Notts who sign up for new loyalty scheme
TESCO Clubcard members in Notts can now earn DOUBLE points for three months if they sign up for the supermarket's new prepaid loyalty card.
The retailing giant’s new pay-as-you-go card scheme lets shoppers "ringfence" their spending by only pre-loading the exact amount they want to spend to their Clubcard Pay+ card.
And for their first three months, Pay+ holders are being offered two Clubcard points for every £1 spent using in Tesco and on Tesco Fuel.
Normally, Clubcard holders receive one one point for every £1 they spend.
All 20 million Tesco Clubcard holders are now eligible to apply for Pay+ cards.
You can do that on Tesco's website.
Much-loved leisure centre in Radford could soon be put up for sale
A leisure centre in Radford could soon be put up for sale because no-one has come forward offering to run it.
Notts TV reports that Nottingham City Council made the decision to close the John Carroll Leisure Centre in Denman Street Central back in June 2021.
Campaigners battled to save the leisure centre, with more than 60 people taking part in a street protest. A petition against the closure was also signed by 2,000 people.
Nottingham Forest Community Trust got involved to see if it could find a ‘long-term sustainable future for the site’ which included organising talks with community based organisations.
But so far, no-one has been found to take over the centre.
A Nottingham City Council spokesman told Notts TV: “Ultimately, if no solution can be found, the land will be put up for sale. This is consistent with the council’s policy for buildings which are no longer operational.
“However, we understand community feeling about John Carroll and hope we can find another way forward.”
