Arrest after man attacked with pole in Basford street
A man was taken to hospital with serious injuries after being attacked in a Notts street.
Police were called to a disturbance in Northgate, New Basford, shortly after 9pm on Monday (January 10).
They found a 63-year-old man with serious facial injuries having allegedly been hit with a pole by another man.
He was taken to Queen’s Medical Centre and treated for injuries that are not thought to be life-threatening.
Enquiries led to the arrest of a 46-year-old man on suspicion of causing grievous bodily harm shortly after the incident.
Detective Sergeant Andy Buxton, of Nottinghamshire Police, said: “This was an appalling assault and we are treating the incident extremely seriously.
“Officers have since made an arrest in connection with the incident, which involved people known to each other.
“Our enquiries into this incident continue and we would encourage anyone with information to report this to police as soon as possible.”
Anyone with information that could help the investigation is asked to call 101 quoting incident 646 of 10 January 2022.”
Workers in Notts can take 28 days off without sick note
Workers in Notts can now stay off work for up to 28 days without having to provide proof in the form of a GP sick note under temporary new rules.
The change in sick pay rules for British workers are currently in place until January 27.
Public sector union Unison told its members: “The UK Government has made a temporary change to the provision of ‘fit notes’ until January 27 2022.
But Bassetlaw MP Brendan Clarke-Smith is calling for the UK Government to reverse the sick pay changes in fears that the new rules could be abused and make the staffing crisis worse.
He told the Telegraph he believed the rule was "open to abuse" particularly in sectors "where we can't really afford for that to happen".
Nottingham is fourth most affected area in the UK for retail insolvency
Nottingham has made it into a new list that reveals where retail was most affected by the COVID-19 crisis
Wholesale Clearance compiled the top 10 showing the places that suffered from the most retail insolvencies between March 2020 and September 2021.
Taking the top spot was Norwich with a whopping 8.27 businesses shutting down out of every 100 and a total of 49 insolvencies.
Newcastle’s rate is also one of the highest of all places mentioned at 7.7 percent - much higher than the average UK unemployment rate of five percent.
Not far behind is Southend-On-Sea at 2.9 businesses shutting down out of every 100, with a total of 25 insolvencies filed.
Nottingham and Sheffield complete the top five with 2.87 and 2.61 businesses shutting down out of every 100, and 35 and 55 total insolvencies filed, respectively.
Single-use condiment sachets could soon be banned
Single-use plastic sachets for condiments and mini milk containers could soon be banned from takeaways, pubs, restaurants and cafes across Notts.
Environment secretary George Eustice last year stated single-use sachets can cause considerable harm to marine environments when disposed of incorrectly, and they are rarely recycled as their size makes them difficult to isolate and clean.
A source close to Eustice told The Sun: “There’s no reason most restaurants can’t use big bottles instead of sachets.”
But Andrew Crook, deputy chair of the British Takeaway Campaign, was concerned about the costs for smaller operators.
He said: “Our favourite takeaways wouldn’t be the same without the sauces on the side, so the government should give small restaurants time to find affordable, non-plastic alternatives and not lumber them with other changes too soon either, like the proposed cutlery and polystyrene cup ban.”
Ikea sick pay cut for unvaccinated staff
Ikea has cut sick pay for unvaccinated UK staff told to self-isolate after close contact with someone who has Covid-19.
Workers at the Swedish furniture giant could now receive as little as £96.35 a week – the Statutory Sick Pay minimum – while they isolate.
Ikea, which has a store in Eastwood and employs more than 10,000 staff in the UK, said it was an “emotive topic” but promised people’s circumstances would be “considered on a case by case basis”.
